Vocal Arts

The audition for vocalists at SCPA is separated into two sections as follows:

Part 1: Prepared Piece

Prepare one of the following art songs (copies in both high and low keys except for “Drink to me” are available for download by clicking on the ‘low’ or ‘high’ link for each song):

“Caro mio ben” by Giuseppe Giordani [Beginning – Measure 21]     Low     High

“Nel cor più non mi sento” by Giovanni Paisiello [Entire Song]    Low     High

“Drink to me only with thine eyes” by Ben Johnson [First Verse]     Sheet Music

“Where ‘ere you walk” by G.F. Handel [Beginning – Measure 16]         Low     High

The excerpt must be sung from memory.  Points will be awarded based on memorization, pronunciation, intonation, tone quality and musical expression.

Part 2: Sight-reading

Prospective students will have thirty seconds to practice an eight measure excerpt of music.  They will then perform the excerpt using either solfege, numbers or a neutral vowel sound.  Points will be awarded based on pitch and rhythm accuracy.  Singers can start on any pitch for Do.

The following is an example of a typical sight reading excerpt:
