SCPA offers a full range of Jazz performance ensembles, including 2 big bands (high school) and small ensembles (high school and middle school).  Instruments in the ensembles include saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drum set, bass, guitar and piano.  The Ellington Jazz Ensemble is an audition-based group and is the flagship ensemble of the SCPA Jazz department.  This ensemble will travel extensively during the school year to participate in music festivals, outreach events and shared concerts with local universities.

Students will progress in the program based on skill level and experience.  Students of all ages will be taught a variety of skills including intonation, rhythm, articulation and phrasing in the appropriate idioms.  All students are expected to practice at least 5 hours per week outside of class.

Students from the SCPA Jazz program have been accepted to and received scholarships from prestigious Jazz institutions including the Juilliard School, Berklee School of Music, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Manhattan School of Music, Cornish College of the Arts, University of Southern California and many others.
